Lungfish are living fossils, an order of prehistoric fish that exhibit vestiges of rudimentary lungs: during periods of drought, adapting to the environment, they take refuge in small, humid burrows and can breathe atmospheric oxygen.
The poetics developed by the Oi Dipnoi trio arises from the encounter between tradition and innovation: one enriches the other in a constant dialogue that celebrates the island's musical heritage. This is a legacy of Valerio Cairone, a multi-instrumentalist who collected the region's melodies. The protagonists of this legacy were shepherds, farmers, and carters, a world extensively explored by celebrated Sicilian writers between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This gives rise to an original repertoire in which themes are developed and sustained by the diatonic accordion, backed by a powerful rhythm section featuring electric percussion or double bass played by Mario Gulisano and Marco Carnemolla.
The result is a new sound rich in personality, thanks to a captivating and light fusion of jazz and archaic progressive folk elements.
